A professional Home Care Aide (HCA) can care for you. If a family member wants to help, ask whether they may be hired as a Family Home Care Aide (FHCA), subject to program and agency requirements.

Whether you work with clients in the community or hope to care for a family member, your role is to provide reliable support while following each client’s individual Plan of Care.
HCA · Professional aideAn agency Home Care Aide supports clients in their homes; the aide does not need to be related to them.
FHCA · Family aideAn eligible family member may ask to become an agency caregiver for a relative. Hiring, screening, training and supervision requirements still apply.
Follow the Plan of CareProvide only the assigned non-medical services and authorized hours. Respect the client’s preferences and tell the office when needs or circumstances change.
Depending on the plan, care may involve personal routines, household tasks and companionship. The plan guides the work; caregivers do not need to guess which tasks a client requires.
